Abstract
This study aims to investigate and analyze the relationships patients¡¯ functional health literacy and understanding of explanation on health providers. Survey was performed aimed for patients 30 over at a hospital in Seoul, from 20 to 28 September in 2011 and finally 104 questionnaires were analyzed. Percentages of correct answer are 61.6% and reading domains (66.5%) are higher than numerical domains. Functional health literacy is the highest in available period of medicine (89.4%) and the lowest in time of taking doses (18.3%). When functional health literacy was divided by three categories, insufficient, borderline, and appropriate levels are represented to 45.2%, 23.1%, 31.7% respectively. In percentages of patients¡¯ understanding on health providers, physicians¡¯ explanation (55.5%) are lower than those of nurses¡¯ explanation (61.7%). Considering characteristics of patients, functional health literacy is statistically significant with gender, age, education, and occupation. Patients¡¯ understanding on explanation of providers is also significant with age, education and perception of disease. Patients¡¯ understanding on explanation of providers was represented to be statistically significant with functional health literacy. In other word, the higher functional health literacy is the higher patients¡¯ understanding on explanation of providers. The authors suggest that society be interested in functional health literacy of minor group such as North Korean defectors, migrants for marriage and work, patients by disease, and elderly, who are increasing rapidly. In additions, not only patients, health care providers should make efforts to improve functional health literacy of patients. To improve outcomes of health education, we have to use more effective and fresh way through media considering characteristics of health information.
